Linda Armantrout

I started drawing when I was very young. I can’t remember a time before drawing. I studied Studio Art at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1965 to 1969. My painting teachers were abstract expressionists, who had studied at Black Mountain College. Of course, you can’t really teach self-expression, so I left rather clueless about abstract expressionism. I did, however, get an incredible foundation in the Art History Department from John Sloane and William Alcott. I was totally taken by 19th century Impressionism and early 20th century Post-Impressionism.

Later, in Denver, I studied design and color theory with Edith Niblo, and 20th century painting really fell into place for me, including abstract expressionism.

Painting for me is about gesture, color, and relationships within the frame. By the time I started oil painting in 1987, I had a good foundation for the compositional choices and color choices that I would make. My intention is originality, and to use the elements of art and principles of design to support content. Teaching encourages me to think deeply about art.

I have lived in Colorado since 1970, and in Boulder County since 1992. Painting the light is enhanced by where I paint, and by my lineage as a student. I l ove being a plein air painter in Colorado. There is so much sky, the majesty of the mountains, and great weather. The light is pure at high altitude. I have also painted in Provincetown where the light comes from three directions. Charles Hawthorne founded the School of Color and Light there during WWI, when impressionists could no longer travel to France to paint with Monet. Hans Hofmann, teacher of abstract expressionists, also taught there. Those teachers taught my teachers.

My vision is to paint my truth. My goal is to develop a visual vocabulary that supports the emotional content of each personal cycle, and connection to God , nature, and the divinity of others.
